Squirrels are small, quick, bushy-tailed rodents belonging to the Sciuridae family, consisting of over 200 species of squirrels within the family, which also includes the prairies dogs, chipmunks and marmots They are categorized majorly into three types names, Tree Squirrels, Ground Squirrels and Flying Squirrels.

They have an average lifespan of 4-6 years in the wild, varying between species.

Squirrels typically have slender bodies, long bushy tails and large eyes. Their soft and silky fur varies greatly in colour.

Squirrels typically range from small to medium size, with an average length of 2.8-5 inches and weight of approximately 10 grams. Our commonly found squirrel in North America are the Grey squirrels which are medium sized squirrels ranging 15 to 20 inches in body length, with their tail adding an additional 5 to 9.5 inches to their length and weighing around 1 to 2 pounds.

Where Do Squirrels Live?

Squirrels are known to live on every continent except in Australia and Antarctica.

Tree squirrels live in wood areas, primarily trees.

Ground squirrels as their name suggests lives underground, in burrows especially during winter when they hibernate.

Flying squirrels live in tree holes or nests made of branches.

What Do Squirrels Eat?

Squirrels are largely herbivores, living off seeds, nuts, fungi and fruits, however at times, are omnivores and they might eat insects or even small vertebrates for survival. On average, squirrels eat about one pound of food per week. Squirrels bury their food in preparation for the cold winter months when supplies are scarce.
