Skunk

Skunk problems can be smelt from far away. Skunks pose health risks, and they produce a very foul odour due to their infamous spray liquid released through their anal glands when threatened. Leaving your skunk problems uninspected holds are major risk of skunks spraying your pets or family, and when left for prolonged periods, your home and the surroundings will take on the extreme odour.

Skunks are small to medium sized, smelly pests belonging to the family Mephitidae. They are 20-30 inches in length and weigh in average 6-10 pounds.

They have a lifespan of 2-4 years in the wild.

Skunks typically have elongated bodies with strong short legs, black and white fur, and law claws for digging.

Skunks can carry contagious diseases, viruses and parasites that can be transitted to humans and/or pets through a bite. Some of the most serious illnesses include:

  • Rabies
  • Leptospirsis
  • Canine distemper
  • Canine hepatitis

Where Do Skunk Live?

The most commonly found skunks in North America are white-striped skunks.

Skunks are extremely adaptable, and they thrive in many different habitats given that food and shelter is available. They typically establish their dens about 2 miles from a water source. Skunk dens can be found in tree hollows, brush piles, abandoned animal burrows, and under porches, shed, deck or front steps of your house.

What Do Skunk Eat?

Skunks typically prefer to dine on insects and grubs/worms, however skunks are omnivores with an opportunistic diet, and they eat a vast diet of both plant and animal matter, often varying with the seasons.

The most effective way to get rid of skunk and prevent skunk damage is being proactive and preventing skunk problems before they get out of hand.

To prevent them from entering your home and causing damage:

  • Seal all entry points and holes they can create a den in
  • Limit access to food sources, shelter, and water in and around your house
  • Repair holes or foundational cracks in your house
